About Björkåfrihet

Björkåfrihet is a Swedish solidarity organization founded in 1965. We operate five stores in the south-west of Sweden where we sell second hand clothes, shoes, furniture etc. The revenue is used to fund cooperation with partners in Palestine, Western Sahara, Algeria, Lebanon and Sweden. Our target groups are people living under occupation or as refugees as a result of occupation and undocumented refugees in Sweden. Our projects are funded by our second hand business and the Swedish back donor ForumCiv. We are certified by “The Swedish Fundraising Control” (http://www.insamlingskontroll.se/en).

Background

Björkåfrihet is implementing a program called “Seeds of Independence” partly funded by ForumCiv. The program focuses on Palestine (the West Bank, Gaza and the Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon) and Western Sahara (occupied areas and Sahrawi refugee camps in Algeria). Both Palestine and Western Sahara share a history of colonization being followed by occupation with war, forced displacement and decades of failed conflict resolution in its wake. Both are now in a state of normalized catastrophe with generations being born and raised in refugee camps or under occupation, a situation where the most basic human right, self-determination, is denied by the occupying forces.  This, in turn, means that almost all other human rights are lacking: food security, freedom from violence, education, freedom of movement, health care etc. Despite sharing similar contexts and problems, cooperation between Palestinian and Sahrawi organizations is not common.

The overall objective of the program is progressive and vibrant Palestinian and Sahrawi civil societies unified in their struggle for self-determination, justice and equality. We work towards that goal by focusing on four different areas: 1) building the organizational and administrative capacity of the POs, 2) supporting them in their efforts to mobilize women and men to claim their human and political rights, 3) increase their capacity to conduct high-impact advocacy work regarding the human rights of Palestinians and Sahrawis, and 4) contribute to a strong network between the POs as well as local and global networks of solidarity.

In 2021 we will organize a meeting in Sweden for representatives of our partners that work principally with media activism in Western Sahara (Equipe Media, Saharawi Voice). The aims of the meetings are capacity building and networking within the field of documentary storytelling.

Purpose and Scope

The purpose of this assignment is to build the capacity of the two Saharawi partner organizations by deepening the knowledge on documentary storytelling and alternative funding such as crowdfunding.

The workshops should be highly participatory, with the aim of enabling participants to practice skills, use tools and techniques and develop competencies during the training, which they will be able to apply in their work.

The consultant will work independently, though under direction of and in collaboration with Björkåfrihet (program officer and head of international cooperation).

Deliverables

  • Arrange a two to three week long training/network meeting for four representatives from the Sahrawi media groups Saharawi Voice and Equipe Media in Sweden on documentary storytelling and alternative funding.
  • Develop workshop proposal, budget, implementation work plan and training session plans.
  • Submit a report upon completion of the assignment showing the activities and the results from the training.

Timeline

The meeting is to take place in Sweden sometimes between August-December 2021.

Financial framework

The budget available for the assignment is 70 000 SEK (incl taxes and VAT). This amount should also include costs for per diem for the participants. The per diem is set in dialogue with Björkåfrihet and will be around 15000-20000 SEK depending on the length of the meeting.
